Shri Chunilal G. Shah: The founder of Sarvajanik Education Society, who was born on 5th May, 1866. He inherited the academic vision, worth and spirit of teaching from his father as he was a teacher in Government Secondary School.

He had worked as a teacher in Surat, Dharampur and Rander and as a clerk in the postal department, before he appeared for the P.E. Examination for the last time in 1888.But having passed the examination he gave up his collegiate education and set about thinking of starting a school, the great work of his life. He was closely  associated with Navalram the author of Gujarati literature. The idea of starting a school not relying on the favour of Government originated with his friend Athawala.

These two friends with two other coworkers and partners took up the questions of serving the city by opening a school to impart good and cheap education. He was foresighted academician without any showy paper qualification, who started the very first school of Society and established Sarvajanik Education Society in October, 1912.

 

Prin. V.K.Rajwade : M.A. Acquired his first B.A. in 1982 securing Varjivandas Sanskrit Scholarship his second B.A. from Deccan College in 1883 & getting First Class with English and Sanskrit. Appointed Dakshina Fellow and passed his M.A. in1986 with English And Sanskrit. He worked as professor of English for nine years at D.J.Sindh College. Principal M.T.B. Arts College from 1921 to 1925 was a profound scholar, He guided the affairs of the Board of Volunteers in the manner of a chief among equals, with circumspection, ability and transparent honesty was Chairman of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.

 

Prin. D.R.Gadgil : M.A., M.lit. Principal M.T.B. Arts College from 1925-1930. Remarkable man unusually gifted with excellent qualities both of head and heart. He piolted M.T.B.Arts college with great tact and  ability. He latter on resumed the position of a Vice Chairman Planning Commission Government of India. He later on became Director of the newly started Gokhle Institute of Politics and Economics of Poona in 1930.

 

Prin N.M.Shah. : M.A.,(Cantab) ,FRAS Born scholar, Renouned Mathematician, B.A. from Fergusson College in 1912 securing the Duke of Edinburgh Fellowship, Fellow of Fergusson College. Studied in Trinity College Cambridge for four years and a half and was elected senior Scholar of the Trinity College. In 1919 he passed the Mathematical Tripose part II and was declared a B*(star) Wrangler. On this result the Trinity College awarded him a Peter Leigh Research Exhibition and year's prize. Worked as a professor of Mathematics at the New Poona College and in 1922 was selected as Principal M.T.B. Arts College in 1930 succeeding Principal D.R.Gadgil.

 

Prof. Vishvanath Krishna Nimkar:  M.Sc. Manchester University. Obtained B.Sc. Wilson College with 1st class in 1919. Professor of Science in M.T.B. College from 1920 was deputed by Sarvajanik Education Society to Manchester for further studies for M.Sc.

 

Diwan Bahadur Chunilal M. Gandhi: B.A.,LL.B. Advocate Notary Public. Principal Sarvajanik Law College. Chairman Managing Committee Sarvajanik Education Society since 1912.He won the Elphinston prize and the Cobedn Club Medal. He was a teacher and then superintendent Elphinston College Hostel Bombay in between 1894 to 1896.

His association with Sarvajanik Education Society since its inception has filled a large space in its history. In 1928 he started the drawing and design class at Surat for the revival of local home industries and Society took over its management in 1934. In 1907 he worked as Secretary of the Indian National Congress. In June 1935 Government conferred on him the title of "Diwan Bahadur" in recognition of his manifold public service especially in the cause of education.

Shri Kanaiyalal M. Munshi (1887-1971) ,the freedom fighter began his liminous life as a lawyer but later turned to politics and literature. Born in Bharuch, he studied in T. & T.V. Sarvajanik High School, Surat in 1897 and continued his education in Baroda College, Vadodara.

After getting his degree in law he started his practice in Bombay Hifh Court and within some years became an eminent jurist. He entered politics as a member of the Subjects Committee of Indian National Congress. He was an activist during the Salt Satyagraha and courted arrested during the Quit India movement. In 1946, He was selected as member of the Experts Committee of Constituement Assembly of India and played a major role in drafting the Constitution of India. A great educationist, he established the Gujarat Sahitya Sansad. He set up the prestigious Bhartya Vidya Bhavan at Bombay and served as its President till his death in 1971.He started the Gujarati monthly 'Bhargava'. In terms of literacy value and informative potential Munshi's contribution to Gujarati literature is overwhelming.

His historical triology in Gujarati, 'Patan-ni-Prabhuta','Gujarat-no-Nath' and 'PrithviVallabh earned widespread attention.He served as President of Sanskrit Vishwa Parishad Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. He was elected Fellow of University of Bombay and Hindi Sahitya Sammelan earning him the title 'Kulpati Dr. K.M.Munshi' which remained his popular sobriquet till the end.

Shri Jyotindra Dave (1901-1980), the pioneer of satire and humorous writings in Gujarati literature was born in Surat and studied in T & T.V. Sarvajanik High School. On completing his matriculation in 1919, he joined the M.T.B. College and obtained his B.A. degree and thereafter his M.A. His collaboration with K.M.Munshi from 1926-33 in Mumbai resulted in the volume 'History of Gujarati Literature'. When Munshi was jailed, he returned to Surat to teach Gujarati laguage at M.T.B. college from 1933-37. On Munshi's request he returned to Mumbai and worked as a translator in Oriental office of Bombay Government until his retirement.

He served as aprincipal in a college at Mandvi, Kutch. For his contribution to Gujarati literature, he received Narmad Suvarna Chandrak in 1950.

A prolific writer some of his celebrated works are Rang-Tarang, Mari Nondhpothi,Hasya-tarang,Pan na Beeda,Alpatma nu Atmapuran,Ret ni Rotli, Ame Badha, Najar lambi and tunki,Triju Sukh,Rog Yog and Prayog,Jya Tya Pade Mari Najar,Jyotindra Tarang,Avastu Darshan,Ashok Parsi Hato,Mahabharat,Ek Drashti,Mari Vyayam Sadhna and dramas like Vish PAn,Bhikshu Akhandanand.

 

Shri Chandravadan C. Mehta (1901-1992), (Popularly known as Chanchi Mehta) was born on 6 APril 1901 in Surat. His primary education was in Vadodara and secondary education in Surat T. & T.V. Sarvajanik High School.He matrculated in 1919 and completed b.A. from Elphinstone College in 1924. In 1928, he joined Mahatma Gandhi in Bardoli Satyagraha. He also joined Navbharat as an editor in 1928. He joined Akashvani in 1938 and became the director of Akashvani, Ahmedabad in 1954.

His play Aag Gadi (Fire Engine) about an ailing fireman, marked the rise of amateur theatre movement in Gujarati theatre. He wrote over 25 plays.He also composed the anthem of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Barod.  In 1960, at Vienna Conference at the International Theatre Inst. under the agies of UNESCO, he moved a resolution to celebrate March 27, as World Theatre Day. He rejected Kumar Chandrak awaded to him in 1950. In 1962, he was awrded Padma Shri. He won the 1971 Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati language for his travelogue Natya Gathariyan.He was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Playwriting in Gujarati in 1971, given by India's National Academy of Music,Dance and Drama.He received Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar for the year 1991.

 

 

Prin. Chandravadan Chunilal Shah (1905-1991), An eminent Educationist and an institution builder,was the founder of many educational institutes which have survived till today. A Sarvajanikan to the core, he received his education at T.&T.V. Sarvajanik High School and joined M.T.B. College for graduation obtaining his B.A. degree in 1926. He earned his M.A. degree from Elphinstone College, Bombay and studied law in Government Law College.

He started his career as a school teacher and became Principal & sculptor of Jeevan Bharti School. The well reputed academic Light House of the State. Later on he became Principal of V. T. Choksi Sarvajanik College of Education from 1961 to 1967. He was appointed very first Vice Chancellor of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University who prior to that formulated the blueprint and contributed lot to the process of establishment of our University. The height of it is that his father Shri Chunilal Ghelabhai Shah was the founder of Sarvajanik Education Society, Surat in 1912 and who started very first English School which was popularly known as Dhilgli School in Surat in 1888.

In honor of his services in the field of Education, he was selected as President of Surat Nagar Prathmik Shikshan Samiti in 1941. He took of leadership of Secondary Teachers Association and soon became Vice President and thereafter President. Due to his efforts, the government of Gujarat implemented the Teacher's Provident Fund and equal salary for all teachers in principle.

Shri Yashwant Shukla (1915-1999), Renowned Scholar, Critic and Orator began his life's journey in Umreth, Central Gujarat. Under the tutelage of Dr Vishnu Prasad Trivedi in the M.T.B. College he earned hisM.A. degree in 1938.He served as Principal of H.k.Arts College for 23 years. During this time he won admiration for his scholarly writings and objective criticism based on neutrality. An excellent prator, he stressed on Ethics and Morality in public life.

He was appointed Vice Chancellor of Saurashtra University in 1974. He also served as a nominated member on the Executive Board of National Literature Academy.He was elected as Convener of the Gujarat Vidya Sabha,. He was the President of the Gujarat Sahitya Parishad in 1984-85. For his contribution to the literacy world he was awarded the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak. Most widly held works by him,

Hitendra Desai (1915-1993) Better known in political circles as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 1965 to 1971. He was an illustrious son of an illustrous father. His father Kanhaiyalal Desai, a jamindar of Olpad prant in British India, had given away all his wealth and estates in the cause of nation and along with his family of women and children actively participated in the freedom struggle. He was born in Surat and studied at T.&T.V. Sarvajanik High School, thereafter joining the M.T.B College and getting his B.A. degree.

Former student of M.T.B. Arts College and V. T. Cholsi Sarvajanik Law College Surat. (From 1937 To 1939)An active student leader, He took a leading part in debates and sports. For his participation in the individual Satyagrah and Quit India Movement, he was arrested and jailed for a year.He was appointed as Education Minister of the re-organized Bombay state of Independent India. He bacame the Law Minister in the first cabinet of Dr.Jivraj Mehta. Later he served as the Home minister and deputy leader of the house.He became the Chief Minister of state of gujarat from 1965 to May 1971.

Shri Jashvant Thaker (1915-1990), was a prominent Gujarati Theatre Director and Actor. He was also a freedom Fighter and political Activist.He was born in 1915 at Mehlav, a small village in Kaira district. He participated in the nationalist movement and underground groups from the age of 16. He studied in M.T.B. College for his graduation.He headed the Drama department of M.S.University, Vadodara, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and Natya Vidhya Mandir, Ahmedabad.

He acted several roles particularly of classical Sanskrit Drama and Shakespearean Drama and also directed plays, both classical and Modern, including Gujarati original like Rasiklal Parikh's Sharvilak and C.C.Mehta's Narmad and Dhara Gurjari. He performed two of his plays NatSamrat and Sharvilak in Surat commemorating the diamond Jubilee of the M.T.B. College in 1978.He is remembered for such memorable roles as shah Jahan, Hamlet, Chankya, and Shivaji. He wrote books on production techniques, edited a Theatre Magazine and scripted Teleplays.

Shri Moreshwar Gajanan Pimputkar, popularly known as Shri M.G.Pimputkar (ICS) was Lieutenant Governer of Delhi and the Chief Vigilance Commissioner of India. Born in 1919 to the Devrukhe Brahmin community of Maharashtra, he studied in M.T.B.College and completed his graduation. After joining the Indian Civil Service, he served as Collector of Nasik and Collector of Ahmedabad. He became Municipal Commisioner of Mumbai in 1960 and later was appointed Director of Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in 1965.He had rendered his academic services as a teacher of English in the capacity of a Research Fellow on account of his exceptional ability genius in depth knowledge of English Literature and Language and research orientation from 1937 to 1938. He thereafter became the collector of Panchmahal District and executed excellent administrative services in the interest of public and the then government.

Shri Manibhai Bhimbhai Desai (1920-1993), Ramon Magsaysay award winner Shri Manibhai Deai had dedicated his life to development of rural life and rural economy through Gandhian constuctive work.A native of Surat, he studied at T.&T.V. Sarvajanik High School and later joined M.T.B. College and got his B.Sc. degree in 1945. An active participant in the Quit India Movement, he was introduced to Mahatma Gandhi by Shri Shantilal Desai, rector of Dayalji Ashram. In 1967, he founded Bhartiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF). BAIF is a pioneer in introducing Indo European hybrid cattle breed in India.He received the Vatumal Federation Award and Shri Jamanlal Bajaj Award.His emissaries minutely cover villages spread over an area of two lakh kilometers on motor cycles provided to them by the foundation and each of his projects for the rural masses has gradually outstripped similar government institutions to become the premier, one of its kind.

Justice Dhirajlal Ambelal Desai(1920-2004) , Eminent Justice and former Judge of Supreme Court of India, popularly known as Justice D.A.Desai was born in dihen of Surat district to an Anavil Brahmin family. He received his early education at T.&T.V.Sarvajanik High School and later completed his B.A. from M.T.B. College. He finished his law studies from Sarvajanik Law College with flying colors.Starting his career as an Advocate of High Court of Judicature at Bombay in 1945, he later enrolled as an Advocate of the High court of gujarat.He soon acquired a formidable reputation in areas of Law such as civil,Criminal,Tenancy,Central Excise and Land Revenue Labor.He was appointed permanent Judge of Gujarat High Court in 1970.His expertise and integrity earned him a place on many law Committees and commissions.

Sarvajanik Education society was privileged to enjoy his services as its President for nine years from 1991 to 2000.

Dr. Jayant Pathak: (1920-2003) was celebrated Gujarati poet, writer and critic.From humble beginnings at Goth in Panch Mahal district, his family moved to Surat. He studied in M.T.B. College and got his B.A. degree in 1943 and m.A. in 1945 from Baroda. He completed his Ph.D degree under Dr.Vishnu Prasad Trivedi.

He started his academic career as a secondary school teacher and then moved to journalism working for Janmabhumi and hindustan.His love of letters led him to join the M.T.B. College as Professor of Gujarati Language and Literature in 1953.

A stellar literacy personality, Dr. Pathak was honoured with almost all the literacy awards. He was awarded Kumar Chandrak in 1957, Narmad Suvarna Chandrak in 1976,Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, Uma-Snehrashmi Award, Soviet Land Nehru Award and Sahtya Akadami Award in 1979. He was elected President of the Gujarat Sahitya Parishad.His notable collections of Poems include Murmur(1954), Sanket(1960), Vismay,Sarg(1969), Antriksha(1975),Anaunaya(1978), Mrugaya(1963) and Suli Uper Sej.

General Arun Shreedhar Vaidya (1926-1986),A brave son of Mother India, a courageous soldier, an examplar officer and 13th Chief of Army staff, General Arun Shridhar Vaidya, retired as India's most decorated soldier in 1986. decorated with Padma Vibhushan, Maha Veer Chakra, Bar to Maha Veer Chakra, AVSM,General Vaidya built a reputation as a brilliant strategist and Military Commander. Born in Alibaug in Maharashtra, he finished his schooling there and studied in M.t.B. College for some time.

He got commissioned in the Indian Army in 1946. As Lieutenant Colonel in command of the Deccan Horse, he was instrumental in the destruction of Pakistan's 1st Armored Divison at the Battle of Chawinda. This earned him the Maha Veer Chakra.

Padma Desai ,is an internationally acclaimed Development Economist. Born in1931 and brought up in Surat, she belongs to an illustrious family of accomplished academicicians.Her father was a Cambridge Scholar and a former Principal of the M.T.B. College while her husband Dr.Jagdish Bhagwati is an internationally renowened Economist of Columbia University.

Smt. Padmaben studied at the Smt.K.L.S.Khandwala Sarvajanik High School for Girls and then at M.T.B. Arts College and obtained her B.A. (Economics)  and M.A. (Economics) degree. Thereafter she went to theU.S. and completed her Ph.D. from Harvard in 1960.

She was U.S. Treasury's Advisor to the Russian Finance Ministry in the summer of 1995. She was President of the Association for Comparative Economics Studies in 2001.

She was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2009.

Justice Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi , the 26th chief Justice of India was born in 1932, studied in his youth at the M.T.B. College as well as Sarvajanik Law College. After participating as an Advocate for ten years, he was appointed as judge to the city civil and Sessions Court of Ahmedabad. He was shortly appointed as Judge of Gujarat High Court in 1976. He worked as Chairman of various Advisory Boards such as Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities, Prevention of Black Marketing, Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities etc. He was appointed as a justice in the Supreme Court of India.

Smt.Elaben Ramesh Bhatt,born in 1933 to a middle class well educated family, She has spent her life for the rights and welfare of India's informal sector women workers. She is founder of world famous women's organization SEWA (Self Employed Women's Association) and served as its General Secretary from 1972 to 1996.Deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Elaben has followed his ideals all her life. Elaben spent her childhood in surat attending the Smt.K.L.S.Khandwala Sarvajanik High School for girls and later studied in M.T.B.Arts College for her B.A. degree.She started her career teaching English for a short period at SNDT women,s University of Mumbai.The dedication and passion with which she participated in labour, Co-operative Women and Micro Finance Movements at National and International level earned her mationwide respect.

Winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award, Right Livelihood Award (1984) and Padma Bhushan (1986), her work gained international recognition as a model of other similar movements around the world.

In November 2011, she was elected for the Indira Gandhi Prize for Pease Disarmament and Development for her lifetime achievement in women empowerment through grassroots enterpreneurship. 

Smt.Ilaben Pathak (1933-2014),Scholar and a Feminist Crusader, Dr.Ilaben Pathak, was founder of AWAG (Ahmedabad Women's Action Group). She studied at M.T.B.Arts College for her B.A. and M.A. degree.She began her career as a University teacher of English Literature at H.K.Arts College, Ahmedabad and wrote on women's issues as afree lance journalist.In the early seveties, she started her crusade against misogyny in gujarati plays. In 1981, she along with her colleagues and students established the Women's Right Organization (AWAG) the acronym means noise.

During 1986-92, Ilaben regulaarly wrote for a feminist quarterly in Gujarati, Nari Mukti, collectively brought out by feminist of Mumbai, Valsad, Suart, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad.

she was President of India chapter of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

 

Shri Chinmay Gharekhan,former Indian diplomat, was born in 1934, in Dabhoi, a town in Central Gujarat. His father Dr.Rajaninath Gharekhan was a Civil Surgeon in the former princely state of Baroda (now Vaodadara). He studied for some time at M.T.B. Arts college for his graduation in the early fifties.Ambassador Gharekhan has had a long and distinguished career in the Indian Foreign service as well as in the United Nations as Under Secretary General and Senior Advisor to the Secretary General. He was Chairman of International Commission for Supervision and Control in Laos and India's Ambassador in Vietnam from 1973-76.He served as India's Permanent Representative to th U.N. Offices in Geneva from 1977-1980.He was foreign affairs advisor to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi between 1981-1986.Thereafter, he served as India's Ambassador to the U.N. in New York from 1986-1992.

At present, he is President of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi, an eminent institute devoted to research and publication of India's cultural heritage.

He is the author of the widely acclaimed book "The Horsehoe Table: An inside view of the UN Security Council".

 

 

Shri Bhagwatikumar Sharma,the living legend of Gujarati literature and journalism his life long association with the Gujarati daily Gujarat Mitra has endeared him to the populace of South Gujarat.Born in 1934 and having studied at T.&T.V.Sarvajanik Vidyalaya from 1946 to 1950, he joined the editorial department of Gujarat Mitra as a working journalist.He later completed his B.A. with Gujarati and English languages through self-study mode. A prolific writer, Shri Sharma has written novels, poetry, critism, essays, memories and travelogues.Urdhvamool, asooryalok, Man Nahi Mane, Shabdateet, Dwar Nahi Khule,Hridayshran,Rikta are his celebrated novels.Spandan is his collection of essays.His autobiography which provides insight into his personality, written using backdrop of Surat of yore is entitled 'Surat Mujh Ghayal Bhumi'. He was President of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 2009-11.He joined Gujaratmitra in 1955.

Aprofusion of awards have been bestowed on his humble and down to earth personality for his literacy contributions.Kumar Chandrak,Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak and the Sahitya Akademi Award and the degree of D.Litt(Doctor of Letters) by Veer Narmad South Gujarat University are crowning awards.

Dr. R.I.Patel: ,Ph.D., Prof. of English in M.T.B. Arts College from 1941 to 1942.He accepted voluntership and worked in M.T.B. from 1950 to 1973. The eminent scholar, eloquent professor, horasious reader, very popularly known as Mobile Encyclopedia amongst the students and scholars of the Society, who retired as volunter from M.T.B. in 1980.

Miss A.D.Cooper: B.A., D.T.(leeds) Lady Superintendent of Sarvajanik Girls High School. The very first Lady Superintendent of the first fullfledged girls school in surat, who worked from 1934 to 1937 and the school marked the height of progress facing unimaginable challenges during her time as it was the DeNovo experiment of starting a seperate institution imparting education to female education exclsively in a seperate institution for first time in Gujarat.

Prin. Chhotubhai Makanji Desai : B.Sc.,Ph.D. Joined m.T.B. from 1946 to 1966 as professor of Chemistry and resumed the post of principal in 1996 and worked as friend, philosopher and guide for the students community upto 1976 and earned title of a "Vigyan Maharshi" in Gujarat.he motivated 30 students to secure M.Phil. degree and 55 students to secure Ph.D. degree, he got his 265 research papers published as the scientific treasure of knowledge in utmost 17 journals of academic repute. As a Scientist he was awarded Gold Medal for his research work and spirit by Gujarat University and Fellowship of Royal Society of  Chemistry London. There are 9 publications in English and 3 in gujarati to his credit as master pieces in the Science of Chemistry.

Prin.K.L.Desai : Joined M.T.B. Arts college as professor of Englsh in 1929 and thenafter worked as  Principal of M.T.B.Arts College (1950 to 1962). He was deputed to Cambridge University for the further study of Tripose in 1925.On held the Post of Principal M.T.B.Arts College till 1962, rendering his untinted academic and visionary services of a literary scholar and critic and dedicated administrator.

 

Prin. Kunjvihari Chunilal Mehta : Joined M.T.B. College as Prof. of Gujarati from June-1946 and Principal from July-1970 to July-1983. He was Secretary Sarvajanik Education Society from 1961 to 1994. He was an ardent scholar academician literary critic and a popular professor who enriched M.T.B. College as well as Sarvajanik Education Society with his work inborn vision wealth of knowledge, dedication and while sincerity of academic spirit of Gurutva in its spiritual sense of the term.

 

Prof. V. R. Trivedi : Joined M.T.B. College as Professor of English & Sanskrit from 1921 to 1950 He taught English, Sanskrit and Gujarati in M.T.B. College for so many years. Besides being a Professor, he was a literary critic of a national repute, and every intch scholar and a genius of the world of literature, still holding the charismatic position of a role model in the hearts and minds of the scholars and the world of literature posthumously.

 

Prin. Janardan Ramchandra Joglekar (1916 to 1952) : Principal, Sarvajanik High School from 1916 to 1930, Principal, Jain High School from 1931 to 1939, Again Principal Sarvajanik High School from 1939 to 1952, Secretary Sarvajanik Education Society from 1917 to 1918 and besides this he offered his services as Superintendent of Girls High School.

Praveen Joshi,studied at the M.T.B.Arts College for his B.Sc. degree. It was in college that he learnt the basic of dramatics and thetrics. His passion for drama soon took him to Mumbai, the home of theatre movement.The veteran dramatist of Gujarati Stage Late Pravin Joshi was a student of M.T.B. Arts College, Surat managed by Sarvajanik Education Society, Surat. He studied for his Bachelor of Arts Degree in the College during the year 1952-53.

Mr. Pravin Joshi is always remembered for his innovative approach in Gujarati theatre. He made his career for Indian National Theatre (INT) under Damu Jhaveri.Among his repertoire of performances, sometimes as actor and sometimes as director, are popular adaptations like Mograna Sap (Snake in the Jasmine),Frederick Knott's Dial M for Murder, Maju Manju(Jean Kens Mary Mary),Chhandarvo (Colourful Canopy),Mosam Chhalake (Pleasant Times).He was an expert on all aspects of stagecraft, be it set design ighting, space arrangement,voice modulation,sound design.His plays were popular with urban middle and upper class segments of Gujarati populace in Gujarat and Mumbai.As an actor-manager he is cosidered the symbole of commercial Gujarati theatre in 1960s and 1970s.

He was popularly known as ‘the Prince of Gujarati Theatre’.

Shri Gunvant Shah enjoys a reputation as a noted thinker, writer, educator and journalist of Gujarat. He is also a distnguished Professor of Education. Dr.Shah was born in 1937, in Rander, a part of Surat; studied in the M.T.B. College for his B.Sc. degree and continued his education in Baroda.

He started his academic career as a lecturer in the M.S.University of Baroda and served as a Reader till 1972. He was a visiting professor to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (USA). He was Professor and Head, Department of Education, Technical Teachers' Training Inst., Madras and Professor of Education at S.N.D.T.Womens's University, Bombay.He was also Chancellor of International Association of Educators for World Peace (Gujarat state) and President of Indian Association for Education Technology.

Currently, he is a free lance journalist, he lives in Vadoara.His weekly columns in Divya-Bhaskar, Chitralekha and Navneet Samparan endeared himto the reading public due to his keen sense of observation of human nature, his gentle satire and sharp incisive analysis.

Dr.Shah received the Ranjitram Suvarna Chadrak. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015.

 

Justice Behram Jehanbux Shethna,is a leading Jurist and a conscientious Judge. He belongs to the illustrious Parsi Community of Gujarat.He was born in 1947, studied in J.J.Parsi School and T&T.V.Sarvajanik MiddleSchool and N.J.Zaveri High School. He obtained his B.Com. degree from Sir K.P.College of Commerce.He studied law in the V.T.Choksi Sarvajanik Law College and started his legal practise in the Gujarat High Court with his elder brother Advocate Shri K.J.Shethna.In his college days he was a good athlete and an enthusiastic sportsman. He led the college athletics team as its Captain.He was declered Mr. Gujarat in the Body Building Comptition in the Master's Category, a commendable feat by an standard.He became a Judge of the Gujarat High Court at an early age of 43 years.

A conscientious judge,he has disposed off as many as 55000 cases at an average of 22 cases per day in a short span of 16 years and six months.
